Exporting Freedom
When one speaks of freedom, many automatically think of the United States of America. However, the concept of freedom is as old as humanity itself. Even though America is an experiment in freedom, people in other countries have the same longing for freedom, especially if their government is oppressive. The John Birch Society believes in freedom for all and encourages those in other countries to work toward constitutional freedom that preserves freedom for generations to come.

Family and Freedom
It is in the context of the family that men and women choose to exercise their most fundamental, God-given right, the right to life. But not only the right to their own life, but the right to create new, inviolate life. It is because it is within the family that the great inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are exercised in their fullest sense that the family is the foundation of all subsequent civilization.

National Sovereignty
At the founding meeting of the John Birch Society Robert Welch warned, “[There is a plan] to induce the gradual surrender of American sovereignty ... to various international organizations...." The Society has always opposed the surrender of American sovereignty to any international organization, such as the United Nations, or the emerging North American Union.

War and Foreign Policy
The John Birch Society agrees with the founders’ vision of a permanently, independent United States that trades with all nations (except for restrictions based on national defense considerations) and only goes to war on the basis of a congressional declaration of war.

For nearly 50 years the John Birch Society has stood for ending inflation by returning to a gold-backed currency and greatly lowering taxes by reducing the size of the federal government to conform to the limited government prescribed by the Constitution.

Privacy and Internet Freedom
The John Birch Society opposes any violations of the right of privacy as secured by the Fourth Amendment. The Society also supports Internet freedom by opposing taxes on, government regulation of, and United Nations control over the Internet.

Health Care
Under our system of freedom, our American health care system became the finest in the world. Now, many propose a system of universal health care run by the government The John Birch Society opposes universal government health care which would inevitably lead to the decreasing levels of quality and health-care rationing experienced by all other nations with national health care.

Education and Homeschooling
The U.S. Constitution does not make any provision for federal involvement in education. Therefore, the John Birch Society opposes all federal aid to and regulation of education. The state should be the highest level of government concerned with education; however, since parents have the ultimate responsibility for the education of their children, local control of education is best. Furthermore, parents should be free to home school their children.

Immigration
It is the position of The John Birch Society that Congress should exercise its power and responsibility under the Constitution (Article 1, Section 8 and Article 4, Section 4) to control illegal immigration by strictly enforcing all existing immigration laws and ending economic incentives for illegal immigration.

Right to Bear Arms
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Second Amendment, U.S. Constitution)
For many decades the John Birch Society has consistently upheld the right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms, as secured by the Second Amendment, for the purposes of hunting, self-defense, and as a last resort to resist tyranny. The Society's staff and members have been very active over the years in opposing the numerous civilian disarmament measures (aka gun control bills) considered by, and all too often passed by, Congress.
